Our Past

The Journey from Air Quality to Weather

It all started in 2000, when Katestone Consultants were tasked with helping the cattle feedlot industry manage the risk of heat stress in grain fed cattle.

With 20 years of experience operating in the weather intelligence space, our aim was to provide targeted information that would help feedlot operators manage risky weather events specific to their needs. Our accurate and trustworthy tools were a huge success, and we are still working with them today! It was with this first project that Weather Intelligence was born.

Since the official inception of Weather Intelligence in 2018, we have provided bespoke solutions to weather related problems for hundreds of users.

From early warning systems for dusty conditions and heat stress to weather-related risk management for adverse processing conditions at plants, our service platform continues to evolve.

A message from the founder & CEO
Christine Killip

Weather has always fascinated me even from an early age growing up in a tiny town perched on top of the Australian Alps. Dad and I never missed the weather report. Being a trout fly fishing guide, Dad always needed to know what was going on with the weather. Would there be a seabreeze today? And if so, what time might it arrive? The arrival of the seabreeze always ruined the fishing! My fascination with weather grew and lead me to studying atmospheric science at University.

After university I spent the next 20 years working as an air quality consultant and growing my business called Katestone Environmental. Over this time, we worked with some big companies helping them solve complex problems relating to air quality. The key to solving a lot of air quality problems was a good understanding of meteorology. Where was the pollution likely to go? Over the years we have developed customised business decision support systems using weather and air dispersion information to help companies minimise or manage their risk.

Our skills were not confined to helping large industry as we have also worked with the agriculture sector. One of our major projects was to help the cattle feedlot industry managing the risk of heat stress in grain fed cattle. By identifying a unique set of weather conditions we were able to alert the feedlot operators to potential conditions to allow them to modify the animals diet to reduce the risk of heat stress. This project started back in 2000 and we are still working with them today! The system is now used by over 200 feedlots and protects 90% of the Australian herd in feedlots. The aim of the service is to provide targeted information specific to the needs of the users to allow them to manage a potentially damaging weather event…… this was the birth of Weather Intelligence.

Weather Intelligence is building on the knowledge and skill developed over the past 20 years to create intelligent weather products designed to solve weather-related problems. We are passionate about weather and look forward to helping your business reduce weather related risks.
